How to Make a Valentine Fabric Fortune Cookie
Valentine’s Day crafts don’t have to be complicated to be adorable, and this little fabric fortune cookie project proves it!
And the best part? It’s quick to make, beginner-friendly, and you don’t even need a full meter or a custom print to make this work; you use fabric scraps lying in their house, or just get your design printed on any Cotton Fat Quarter!
What You’ll Need
To make your Valentine fabric fortune cookie, gather the following materials:
- Cotton fabric (preferably Calico Plain Cotton)
- Scissors
- Pins or clips
- Sewing machine (or hand sewing if you prefer)
- Iron
- Pen + a small strip of paper for the “fortune” message
Step-by-Step Tutorial
Step 1: Trace and Cut Your Fabric Circle
Start by turning your fabric over to the wrong side. Using a round object or template, draw a circle that measures 5.5 inches in diameter.
Cut out two identical circles from your fabric.
These two pieces will be sewn together to create a neat, finished cookie that holds its shape.

Step 2: Place Fabric Right Sides Together and Sew it
Lay the two circles on top of each other with the right sides facing in (so the pretty sides are touching).
Pin or clip around the edges to keep everything aligned.
Sew around the edge of the circle using a small seam allowance (around ¼ inch works well).
Important: Leave a small opening (gap/slit) so you can flip the fabric right-side out afterwards.

Step 3: Turn the Circle Right-Side Out
Carefully pull the fabric through the opening to flip the circle right-side out.
Use your fingers to smooth the curve and make the edges look clean and rounded.
Tuck the raw edges of the opening inward neatly.
Then sew around the entire outer edge of the circle (topstitching). This will close the turning gap, give a neat finished border, help the cookie hold its shape nicely

Step 4: Fold the Circle in Half
Fold the circle into a neat semicircle, matching the edges. Now sew a short seam through the centre of the folded semicircle.
Leave space at the top and bottom, don’t sew all the way to the edges. This is what helps form the cookie structure and leaves room for your fortune slip later.

Step 5: Fold Again and Press
Fold the semicircle in half again (so it becomes a smaller wedge/quarter shape).
Give it a quick press with an iron to set the fold firmly.

Step 6: Hold It Like Bunny Ears
Hold 2 pieces of the folded piece so it looks like two little bunny ears- one on each side. Now grab one “ear” and gently pull it over and around the other ear until it starts to look like a tiny little hat.

Step 12: Pop the Corner Into Shape
Using your thumb, gently pop the corner of the hat inward/outward (depending on how it sits).
And just like that… it transforms into the classic fortune cookie shape!

Now write a short Valentine note on a small strip of paper and slide it into the pocket/opening of your fabric fortune cookie, and it's all ready!
